October is Eczema Awareness Month
Join us in honoring everyone who battles the complex and frustrating condition known as eczema (atopic dermatitis).
People with eczema are up against an inflammatory, itchy skin disease that can range from mildly annoying to debilitating. It’s time to reveal the #TheRealEczema!
The National Eczema Association (NEA) seeks to #unhideECZEMA. They encourage everyone with the condition to raise awareness by sharing their story and including the hashtag. In October and all throughout the year, the NEA provides a wealth of eczema information that can guide patients from the day of diagnosis through various treatment options and into a community support group of fellow eczema warriors. If you have a question about eczema, chances are you can find your answer on their website.
Whether you struggle with eczema or are fortunate to not have any personal experience with it, take a few minutes to learn more by watching “The Real Eczema,” a brief video that features experts, real patients, and a parent of an eczema patient. Together, they shine a bright light on the condition and bring it out into the open. It’s time to end the stigma and embarrassment associated with eczema!
Everyone understands that eczema takes a physical toll, but research has also proven a link between eczema and mental health issues. Children, adolescents, and adults with eczema are more likely to experience depression and anxiety than people who do not face the skin condition. The negative mental health effects are greater on adults with eczema than on patients who have heart disease, diabetes, or high blood pressure.
Now that these findings have emerged, researchers understand the broad impacts of the disease and are working diligently to help improve the lives of eczema patients through new treatments and eventually find a cure.
